To choose a longer tour with Icelandic horse in the mountains is a perfect way to see the mountains. You get to know the Icelandic horse, have an adventure, be out in the nature, sit round a campfire, learn about the Sami culture and sleep in a Sami tent (lávvu). The main things will be the horse, riding, nature, weather and food, a long way away from stress. This tour is for you who want to ride up in the mountains with great views, near the nature in an area where very few people are. Mostly we ride in pathless terrain or on small paths. This is also for you who do not mind helping out with camping chores and not mind to be without luxury to experience the natural way of being out in the nature. For this tour you need to have riding experience.
Mostly we ride in pathless terrain and on small tracks so we get to know the sure-footed Icelandic horses. We can ride in different tempos depending of the terrain. We ride on the bare mountain, in svamp areas and in the forest. Both nights we sleep in a Sami tepee (lávvu) where we sleep in sleeping bags round the fireplace. In the tepee we can make a fire if we want to. During the tour we have an extra horse carrying the food and other things, but everyone carries her/his own personal things in saddle-bags on the own horse. For washing ourselves we use the clean water in the mountain creeks. It is good if you have some experience of camping. We cook the food together over a fire when we are outdoors. The food is exclusive specialities from this area, for example reindeer meat and fish prepared in a traditional way. On the tour we help each other with the horses and with camp chores. Sometimes we need to lead the horses when the terrain demands it. Because we are riding in a mountain area we have sometimes to change the route because of the weather.
The first day we ride through the forest, over svamps and up to the bare mountain. You get a horse which suits you. We ride on the south side of the Kalix river and arrive to our overnight place in the afternoon. After breakfast next day we ride a day tour over the bare mountain with a fantastic view. We finish the riding day3 in the afternoon at the same place like we started the tour and from there back to the farm by car. On some of the tours day2 we go west to Ratekjokk where we sleep in a cabin and day three is a dayride or ride to Ratekjokk the third day. Then we leave the horses there and cross the Kalix river by boat and then with car back to our farm (can also be ridden in the other direction).
The first day we meet in the morning on our farm for shared transportation to our starting point. To our farm you can come with bus or car. The food is exclusive specialities from this area, for example reindeer meat and fish. On the tour we help each other with the horses and with camp chores. Sometimes we need to lead the horses when the terrain demands it.
On this tour it is three days of riding and you can choose to arrive in the morning the first riding day and leave in the afternoon the third riding day (3 days program) or you can make it more convenient for you and stay a night before and after with meals (on our farm) and transfers (5 days program).
We ride about 15-25 km every day. The Icelandic horse is a strong horse but not very big so the rider´s max weight is 90 kg. You will get a list of equipments to bring when you book the tour. If you need extra accommodation and transfers you can book it with us for an extra charge.
